Construction of Stage 2 of the $1 billion Nepean Redevelopment is entering an exciting new phase with preparation for the commencement of bulk excavation now underway.

Bulk excavation involves digging and flattening the site to set the foundations of the new building.

When construction is complete, the new Stage 2 building will include a new intensive care unit, renal services, medical imaging, a new paediatric ward and a new, accessible front-of-house for the hospital.

The Stage 2 building footprint is approximately 3,500 sqm, and when complete the building will seamlessly connect to the hospital’s 14-storey tower, known as Building A.

CPB Contractors Project Manager, Rob Vranjesevic said that now demolition works are complete, construction will really ramp up on site.

“This week, we are pulling out the old ground concrete slab of North Block before we begin digging out the site,” Rob said.

“When bulk excavations are complete early next year, we will have a set space that the new building is going to occupy and will start pouring the slab on the ground.”

Nepean Redevelopment Manager, Paul Isaac said the bulk excavation stage is great news for hospital staff, patients and visitors.

“With demolition complete   and refurbishment and repurposing works almost finished, construction will soon be contained in one area that is separate from the day-to-day hospital   functions,” Paul said.

vibrations and hear   construction noise from   time to time.

"However, every effort is   being made to minimise   disruptions and we   appreciate everyone’s   patience and support as   we progress this important   project.”

Prior to bulk excavation, several services that were previously located in Building D (formally known as North Block) were relocated to other parts of the hospital campus.

In the past few months, the Pathology and Pharmacy departments have moved into new and expanded spaces.

The Nepean Redevelopment is being delivered in two stages. Nepean Hospital’s new 14-storey clinical tower, delivered under Stage 1 of the $1 billion redevelopment, opened to patients and staff in 2022.

Construction on Stage 2 started this year following the award of the construction tender to CPB Contractors.

Stage 2 construction is scheduled for completion in late 2025 and expected to open in stages from early 2026.

Over the holiday season, the construction site will be closed from 23 December 2023 to 7 January 2024. During this period, the site will be monitored by security guards and CCTV cameras.

The Nepean Redevelopment team wishes you and your family a safe and relaxing holiday season!
