A new purpose-built Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) unit is being built as part of the NSW Government’s $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program and construction is well underway.
Designed for young people aged between 12-17 years of age, the CAMHS unit will feature a sensory room which was co-designed by carers and consumer representatives.
Carer representative Kirsty Simpson said the sensory room is a place to help young people with their emotional regulation. There will also be sensory items such as fidget toys and weighted blankets to help distract and calm them.
Consumer representative Will Honan said the sensory room is one of many "mediums" in the unit to help consumers work towards their recovery.
Construction of the new CAMHS unit is expected to be completed in 2025 with the new unit ready to accept patients following an operational commissioning period.
