What is the Nepean Redevelopment Stage 1?

Stage 1 of the redevelopment includes a major upgrade and expansion of Nepean Hospital and community-based health services. 

How much is the Stage 1 redevelopment costing?

The NSW Government has committed $550 million towards the Nepean Redevelopment and an additional $26 million to deliver a multi-storey car park to support the expansion of services.

What services will be included as part of the Stage 1 funding commitment?

The funding will allow us to deliver the first phase of the Nepean Redevelopment.

The redevelopment will include:

• A new clinical services block
• A new and expanded Emergency Department
• More than 12 new operating theatres
• 18 birthing suites in new accommodation, an increase of ten
• A new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
• More than 200 overnight beds in new accommodation
• A new helipad
• New community health services and;
• An expansion of Oncology Services

Where is the new car park?

The multi-storey car park will be built on the corner of Barber Ave and Parker Street.

Why is the car park being built first?

The car park is being prioritised to make space for construction of the clinical tower and to support the expansion of services.

How many extra spaces will the new car park provide?

The new car park will deliver more than 600 additional car spaces on campus once Stage 1 of the redevelopment is complete.

How many extra accessible car spaces will the campus include?

The project team is working with the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District and the redevelopment consumer committee to deliver a campus-wide approach to accessible car parking.

This includes delivering accessible car spaces in convenient locations across the Nepean Hospital site, designing an undercover drop-off zone and short-stay parking area at the entry of the new clinical tower and facilitating safe and accessible pick-up and drop-off zones for hospital transport (trolley) services. 

Has asbestos been found on the car park site?

Remediation works are currently being carried out onsite to remove any hazardous materials in accordance with SafeWork NSW regulations. This includes regular air monitoring to maintain the safety of everyone on the Nepean Hospital campus.

Who determined what would be included in Stage 1 of the redevelopment?

The scope of the redevelopment was determined by the NBMLHD clinical services plan and extensive consultation key health representatives.

What services will be included in Stage 2?

The Nepean Blue MOuntains Local Health District is currently developing a clinical services plan with helps to determine the furture health needs of the population based on a range of different information such as hospital data, demand for services and future population projections.

Where is the project up to at the moment?

During the next 6-12 months, the focus areas for the redevelopment are:
- Continued planning for the new clinical tower and community-based services
- Continued construction for the new multi-storey car park
- Starting construction on the expansion of Oncology services at Nepean Cancer Care Centre
- Starting construction on a new renal unit at Katoomba Hospital
- Planning for Stage 2.

What is the Nepean Redevelopment Stage 2?

On 25 March 2018, an additional $450 million was pledged by the NSW Government for Stage 2. The Redevelopment team will be reaching out to hospital staff, patients and the broader community about service priorities for Stage Two in the second half of this year.

Will Tower 1 and Tower 2 be connected?

The redevelopment Team will work closely with hospital staff to determine how Stage 2 will integrate and connect with Stage 1 as part of the detailed planning process. The first priority is to determine which clinical services will be included in Stage 2.

When will construction on Stage 2 begin?

Stage 2 works will follow on after Stage 1 is completed. Stage 1 is scheduled for completion in 2022.

When will construction on Stage 2 be complete?

At this stage of the planning it is too early to say.

Who is funding Stage 1 and 2 of the redevelopment?

Where is the project at right now?

The redevelopment is currently in the planning phase for new tower, the Nepean Cancer Care Centre expansion and the Blue Mountains Dialysis Centre. Meanwhile, work has started for the new multi-storey car park with the demolition of the old Pialla building almost complete.

Who determines what is included in the redevelopment?

The scope of the redevelopment is determined by the NBMLHD clinical services plan and extensive consultation key health representatives.

Who determined what clinical services should be included in the redevelopment?

The clinical services listed in the scope were all identified as key priorities by the Local Health District as part of the Clinical Services Plan, and further reinforced during a Value Management Workshop last year.

Who is responsible for delivering the redevelopment?

Health Infrastructure is overseeing the Nepean Redevelopment on behalf of the NSW Government. Health Infrastructure manages the planning, design and delivery of all health infrastructure capital works over $10 million throughout NSW.

There is also a dedicated project team which is composed of representatives from NBMLHD, Nepean Hospital staff, Ministry of Health and the lead design team.
